PUB QUIZ AND QUIZ NIGHT NEWS AND EVENTS
2009 Monteith's New Zealand Pub Quiz Championship
The 42 teams who took part in the 2009 Monteith's New Zealand Pub Quiz Championship on October 18 at the Horse & Trap in Auckland, were treated to an interesting three hours of rollicking fun and brain-busting seriousness. The sponsored product, Monteith's Crushed Apple Cider was a great choice, and was most appreciated by all of the 252 participants (and quiz staff I might add). A fantastic prize table for all teams who placed in the top ten, all of whom received a case of Monteith's Crushed Apple Cider to take home, along with various other goodies, to a value of around $5000.
The winning team was Eddie M'Bubu from Wellington, who outclassed the field to win by 5 points, the biggest winning margin in the ten years of the competition, and their third title. There was a four-way tie for second, and a further three-way tie for 6th so multiple tie breaks were needed to determine the final placings. The best represented pub was Auckland's Kings Arms Tavern, who had all three of their teams place in the top ten, 4th, 6th and 8th respectively. Further accolades to Manukau City's Finn McCool's Irish Pub, whose team Anna Kournikova finished second, the highest placed Auckland team. The third placed team, Posties Plus, from The Black Salt Bar in New Lynn, were the most improved, having finished second-to-last in 2008!
The staff and management at the Horse & Trap were also absolutely awesome to deal with as always, and how we managed to fit 252 people into their ground floor restaurant I'll never know.
Many thanks to DB and the Horse & Trap for their support, details will be on this website shortly of next year's event.
