2011 Steinlager New Zealand Pub Quiz Championship  

The 2011 Steinlager New Zealand Pub Quiz Championship was held on the night of Saturday December 10. The Space Monkeys, from McCarthy's Irish Bar in Parnell won their first title at their sixth attempt, with a score of 81 points from a possible 100. A last minute ring-in to their team was their regular quizmaster - Hamish, who was the only one in the team who recognised Rumer Willis in the 'Who Am I' round, to give them the point they needed to rise above two other teams, The Dhama Bums from Gables Speight's Alehouse in Herne Bay, and Achy Drakey Heart from The Drake in Freeman's Bay, who both scored 80.

54 teams crammed into the main exhibition hall at Waipuna Hotel & Conference Centre, in a contest that saw the lead change eight times during the night. Indeed, the only time the Space Monkeys led, was in fact after the final round. With a fantastic prize table courtesy of Steinlager, teams from first to tenth all were well rewarded, and eight other teams also received prizes, notably Sally's Steampunk Penguins from Fat Sally's Bar in Oamaru, who won the award for the most-travelled team, and Quiz Team Rambo from Carpark Bar in Auckland CBD, who won 'Best Dressed'.   

Nicole Whippy, Shane Cortese, Debbie Newby-Ward and Will Hall from Nothing Trivial entered their "Sex On A Stick" team, and shock horror! They beat the aptly named and subtly dressed "Quiz Team Rankin" by five points, although it's fair to say neither team threatened the first page of the leaderboard at any stage. The Space Monkeys, as part of the winning team of the 2011 Steinlager New Zealand Pub Quiz Championship, have also won the right to spend some time on the set of Nothing Trivial in 2012.
